What Is the Difference Between BNC B5 Acid Primer and BNC Nail Prep?

Was ist der Unterschied zwischen BNC B5 Acid Primer und BNC Nail Prep?

What is the difference between primer and nail prep? You're preparing nails for a nail set and wondering whether to use the primer or the nail prep first – or whether you need both at all? Don't worry: these two products have similar goals, but they work differently and are not interchangeable.

In this article we show you the difference between BNC B5 Acid Primer and BNC Nail Prep – and how to use both correctly for perfect adhesion with gel or acrylic nails.

BNC Nail Prep – the first step to clean, oil-free nails

BNC Nail Prep is a degreaser and dehydrator for the natural nail. It removes excess moisture and natural oils from the nail plate, creating the basis for reliable adhesion. Without this preparation, lifting can quickly occur – especially with oily natural nails.

  • Degreases and dehydrates the nail plate
  • No curing needed – air-dries in approx. 30 seconds
  • Applied after filing and before the primer
  • Supports the adhesion of gel, acrylic and nail tips

Our tip: Apply BNC Nail Prep thinly to the entire natural nail before every nail set – it's the standard step in your preparation.

BNC B5 Acid Primer – for maximum adhesion on problem nails

BNC B5 Acid Primer is an acid-based bonding agent. It acts as a bridge between the natural nail and the nail material and, according to the product description, significantly increases the adhesion of gel and acrylic nail sets. It is suitable for gel nails, acrylic nails and toenails.

  • Acid-based – apply sparingly
  • Ideal for problem nails, heavy oil production or adhesion difficulties
  • Apply to the natural nail only – avoid contact with skin and cuticle
  • Let it air-dry after application
  • For thin or sensitive nails, better use an acid-free alternative

Our tip: Use B5 Acid Primer specifically when you regularly struggle with lifting or your client has very oily nails. Less is more – one dab per nail is plenty.

The acid-free alternative: BNC Primer Ultra Bond

For sensitive nails there is BNC Primer Ultra Bond. It is acid-free, according to the product description gentler on the natural nail than acid-based primers, and still suitable for adhesion difficulties. This low-odour primer leaves a slightly tacky bonding layer and air-dries in approx. 30 seconds. You'll find all prep products in our Primer & Nail Prep category.

The right order for preparation

  1. Push back the cuticles and remove loose cuticle from the nail plate.
  2. Lightly buff the natural nail and thoroughly remove the dust.
  3. Apply nail prep and let it dry.
  4. Apply primer sparingly – acid-based or acid-free depending on the nail – and let it air-dry.
  5. Continue with base gel, one-phase gel or acrylic.

💡 Pro tip for salons

Wipe the brush of the acid-based primer well on the neck of the bottle before applying and dab it only onto the centre of the nail – the primer spreads by itself. This avoids skin contact and overdosing. Always keep the bottle tightly closed and out of the reach of children.

Two products – two functions

  • BNC Nail Prep prepares the nail gently and is ideal for everyday salon work.
  • BNC B5 Acid Primer is used when needed – for particularly stubborn cases where maximum adhesion is required.

Combined correctly, both ensure optimal preparation and long-lasting results. If the nail set still lifts, you'll find possible causes in our article Gel nails lifting and on the page Gel problems & solutions.

FAQ: Primer and nail prep

What comes first – nail prep or primer?

Nail prep first, then primer – that's also how the product description of BNC Nail Prep specifies it.

Do I always need an acid-based primer?

No. For normal nails an acid-free primer such as BNC Primer Ultra Bond is often enough. Use B5 Acid Primer specifically for problem nails or recurring lifting.

Does the primer need to be cured under the lamp?

No. Nail prep and primer air-dry. Only the following gel layer is cured.

What should I do if primer gets on the skin?

Remove it immediately with a lint-free wipe. If the skin becomes irritated, rinse thoroughly with water and seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
