Gel problems at a glance
| Problem | Quick answer | Detailed guide | Matching products |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gel or shellac is lifting | Usually it comes down to prep: push back the cuticle thoroughly, remove the shine, dehydrate the nail and use a primer. Never apply gel to skin or cuticles. | Gel nails and shellac lifting | BNC Nail-Prep (Dehydrator) BNC Primer Ultra Bond BNC No-Lines Lifting Minimizer |
| Shellac only lasts a few days | Apply thin layers, cap the free edge with every layer and cure each layer completely. Base and top coat are always part of the system. | What is shellac? Applying shellac correctly | BNC Shellac Sealer Base & Top Shellac / UV nail polish |
| Gel is still sticky after curing | A sticky inhibition layer (dispersion layer) is normal for many gels and is removed with cleaner. If the gel underneath is soft, the layer was too thick or the curing time too short. | Cleaner, primer, nail prep & remover | BNC Cleaner Clear BNC Finish Gel without sticky layer BNC lint-free wipes |
| Burning or heat under the lamp | Curing releases reaction heat – the thicker the layer, the more heat. Work in thinner layers, take your hand out briefly if it gets hot and then continue curing. | UV or LED lamp? Buying guide | BNC Fibreglass Gel Clear Builder gels |
| Gel turns yellow | Common causes are incomplete curing, a top gel without anti-yellowing protection, light and heat during storage or discoloration from nicotine, hair dye or self-tanner. | Choosing the right finish gel Storing nail products correctly | BNC High-Gloss Finish Gel without sticky layer Finish gels |
| Brittle, soft natural nails | Care for them regularly with nail oil, keep them short and file gently. A thin overlay with builder gel protects the natural nail in everyday life. | Brittle nails: causes & measures Builder gel & BIAB | Nail oils BNC Professional Builder Gel Clear |
| Lifting at the cuticle | The gel was applied too close to or onto the cuticle, or cuticle tissue was left on the nail plate. Keep a hairline gap and push back the cuticle thoroughly beforehand. | The perfect base for gel nails | BNC Gel Spatula / Cuticle Pusher BNC Angled Gel Brush No. 4 BNC Bonding Gel Violet |
| Removing gel or shellac correctly | Shellac and soak-off products are soaked and gently pushed off, builder gel is filed or drilled off. Never peel it off – layers of the natural nail come away with it. | How do I remove my gel nails? Nail drill bits explained | BNC Shellac Remover with Lanolin BNC Remover Pads Nail drills & bits |
| Suspected allergy / HEMA | Uncured gel must not touch the skin. If redness, itching or swelling occur, stop the treatment and have it checked by a doctor. To be on the safe side, choose HEMA-free products. | What does HEMA-free mean? | BNC Bonding Gel Violet (HEMA-free) BNC Polyacryl Gel Clear (HEMA-free) BNC Fibreglass Gel Clear (HEMA-free) |
| Lamp does not cure properly | Check that lamp and gel match (UV, LED or UV/LED), follow the curing times stated for the product and cure thumbs separately. Old UV tubes lose power over time and should be replaced. | UV or LED lamp? Buying guide BNC curing lamps | BNC 168 Watt UV/LED Curing Lamp BNC 26 Watt UV/LED Lamp BNC 9 Watt UV Replacement Tube |

💡 Pro tip for salons
When a client comes back with a complaint, note on which fingers and where the gel is lifting. Lifting always on the same nails points to the nail plate (e.g. oily or very flexible nails), lifting at the cuticle points to the prep, and lifting at the tip points to missing capping or a stress area that is too thin. This helps you find the cause faster and take targeted action.
FAQ: Common questions about gel problems
Why is my gel lifting after just a few days?
In most cases the prep is the cause: cuticle residue on the nail plate, shine that was not removed or oil on the natural nail. Nail prep and a suitable primer improve adhesion considerably.
Is the sticky layer after curing a mistake?
No. Many gels form an inhibition layer, which even helps the next layer adhere when building up. After the final step you remove it with cleaner – or you use a finish gel without a sticky layer.
Is it normal to feel heat under the lamp?
A feeling of warmth is normal, because curing releases reaction heat. If it gets uncomfortably hot, take your hand out briefly and work with thinner layers in future.
Can I simply soak off builder gel?
Classic builder gels cannot be soaked off; they are filed or drilled off. Soaking works for shellac, UV polishes and soak-off products.
What should I do if my skin turns red or itches after gel nails?
Stop the treatment and have the symptoms checked by a doctor. For future sets: no skin contact with uncured gel, don't overload the brush and choose HEMA-free products.
