"What is Shellac?", "how to remove Shellac" and above all "Shellac pedicure" – searches for these terms have risen significantly in recent months. No wonder: UV nail polish combines the easy application of nail polish with the durability of gel. Here's everything you need to know.
What is Shellac?
"Shellac" was originally a brand name, but today it's commonly used for UV nail polish or gel polish. It's brushed on like regular polish but cures under a UV or LED lamp. The result: high-gloss, instantly dry nails that last two to three weeks. You'll find a large selection in our Shellac / UV nail polish category.
Shellac vs. gel vs. nail polish
In short: Shellac is ideal if you want your natural nails to stay beautifully polished for longer – without extensions. If you need more strength or length, gels are the better choice.
How to apply UV nail polish correctly
- Prepare: Push back the cuticles, shape the nail and lightly roughen it.
- Degrease: Remove oil and dust with nail prep.
- Base coat: Apply thinly and cure. Read why base and top coat are so important in Base coat and top coat.
- Colour: Two thin layers of UV polish, curing each one. "Cap" the free edge so nothing chips.
- Top coat: Apply, cure and, if needed, wipe off the sticky layer with cleaner.
Shellac pedicures: why they're so popular
Searches for "Shellac pedicure" have more than doubled recently – and for good reason. On toenails, UV polish often lasts even longer than on fingernails, as toenails grow more slowly and are less stressed. Four to six weeks are not unusual.
How to get a perfect Shellac pedicure:
- A foot bath and thorough callus and cuticle care beforehand
- File nails straight across to avoid ingrown nails
- Degrease the nail plate especially thoroughly – toenails are often oilier
- Use toe separators so nothing smudges
For salons, a Shellac pedicure is an ideal add-on service that combines well with a classic foot care treatment.
Removing Shellac – the gentle way
- Lightly roughen the top coat so the remover can penetrate.
- Soak cotton pads in remover or acetone, place them on the nail and secure with foil or clips.
- Leave on for about 10–15 minutes.
- Gently push off the softened polish with an orange wood stick – never peel or pick it off!
- Then care for nails and cuticles with cuticle oil.
Important: Peeling off forcefully removes layers of the natural nail and can lead to brittle nails.
FAQ: Shellac & UV nail polish
Is Shellac harmful to nails?
No – not with correct application and gentle removal. Problems are usually caused by filing too hard or picking it off.
Do I need a special lamp for Shellac?
You need a UV or LED lamp. Check the product to see which lamp it's suitable for.
Can I apply Shellac over gel nails?
Yes, UV polish can also be used on cured gel – handy if you only want to change the colour.
