Step-by-step guide: doing your own gel nails

1. Prepare the natural nail

Wash and dry your hands thoroughly. Gently push back the cuticles and file the nail into shape. Then lightly roughen the surface until the shine is gone – don't file too hard! Remove all dust thoroughly. We explain preparation in detail in The perfect base for gel nails.

2. Degrease and apply primer

Degrease the nail with nail prep and, if needed, apply a thin layer of primer. From now on, don't touch the nail plate with your fingers.

3. Apply and cure base or bonding gel

Work in a very thin layer and cure under the lamp. Make sure not to touch the cuticle – otherwise the gel may lift later.

4. Sculpt the builder gel

Place a small bead of gel in the centre of the nail and spread it evenly. The highest point (apex) should be roughly in the middle of the nail. Briefly turn your hand over so the gel flows towards the apex, then cure.

5. Apply colour gel

Two thin layers of colour gel are better than one thick one. Cure each layer separately. Learn how to get a clean edge without flooding in How to apply colour gel correctly.

6. Seal and remove the sticky layer

Finally, apply finish gel and cure. If your finish leaves a sticky (inhibition) layer, wipe it off with cleaner. Your DIY gel nails are done!

7. Care for your cuticles

A drop of cuticle oil completes the result and keeps the cuticles supple.

The 5 most common beginner mistakes

  1. Layers too thick: Thick layers cure poorly and look bulky.
  2. Gel on the cuticle: The main cause of lifting. Always leave a small gap.
  3. Curing time too short: Stick to the recommended time for your lamp and gel.
  4. Nail not properly degreased: Oil and dust prevent adhesion.
  5. Filing too hard: Only lightly roughen the natural nail – it should stay healthy.

Short gel nails: ideal for practising

"Short gel nails" are among the most popular searches – and they're perfect for getting started. A gel overlay on the natural nail is easier than an extension, looks natural and is practical in everyday life. Once you feel more confident, you can move on to tips and forms.
