Builder gels compared: which gel suits your salon?

Aufbaugele im Vergleich: Welches Gel passt zu deinem Studio?

Builder gels compared – anyone who works in a nail salon knows that not all builder gels are the same. Choosing the right gel determines durability, handling and client satisfaction. But which gel is suitable for which technique? And how do self-levelling, firm and fibreglass gels differ?

In this article we show you the different types of builder gel, what to look out for – and which gels you should definitely test in your salon. You'll find all gels in our Builder gels category.

What matters in a builder gel

Before you decide on a gel, it's worth looking at these properties:

  • Viscosity: thin, medium or thick – the thicker the gel, the easier it is to sculpt extensions and the apex.
  • Flow: self-levelling gels smooth out by themselves, firm gels stay exactly where you place them.
  • Heat development: some gels produce noticeable heat during curing – a gel with little heat development is more comfortable for sensitive clients.
  • Coverage: clear for a natural look and nail art, tinted (e.g. pink) for a polished look without colour.
  • Container size: for salons with high consumption, large sizes pay off – more on this in our article Why large pack sizes are ideal for nail salons.

1. Self-levelling gels – ideal for a smooth workflow

These gels flow evenly and level out by themselves, which significantly reduces filing. Perfect for:

  • fast work in everyday salon life
  • even surfaces
  • clients with short to medium-length nails

Our recommendation: BNC Professional Builder Gel clear is thick and self-levelling, yet doesn't run into the side walls – ideal for precise sculpting and the form technique. Please note: it develops a lot of heat during curing. If you prefer a soft rose tone, go for BNC Builder Gel clear rose, which is also self-levelling and well suited to extensions on forms.

2. Firm gels – for precise shaping

Do you work with forms or build C-curves in a targeted way? Then you need a gel with high stability. It stays where you apply it without running – ideal for precise work and long nails.

Our recommendation: BNC Stress Point Builder Gel was specially developed for reinforcing the stress area. Thanks to its firm consistency it doesn't run into the side walls – stable, sturdy and perfectly mouldable. This gel also produces noticeable heat during curing. Whether you prefer to extend with tips or forms is covered in our article Nail extensions: tips or forms?

3. Fibreglass gels – extra strong, even for problem nails

Fibreglass gels contain fine glass fibres that make the overlay particularly stable and resistant to breakage. They are ideal for:

  • clients with brittle or splitting nails
  • reinforcing natural nails and nail repairs
  • long-lasting results

Our recommendation: BNC Fibreglass Gel clear is thick, self-levelling, very stable and scratch-resistant – and develops hardly any noticeable heat during curing. According to the product description, it is also vegan and HEMA-free. An alternative is BNC Masterline UV/LED Fibreglass Gel clear, which is firm and flexible and cures without burning. More variants can be found under Fibreglass gels. Read more about HEMA in What does HEMA-free mean?

4. Flexible builder gels – elastic and comfortable

Flexible builder gels give a little under stress, reducing the risk of cracks. BNC Profi Builder Gel (Moonlight) elasto soft is firm and flexible, free from HEMA and acids and, according to the product description, doesn't burn during curing. It is suitable for all sculpting techniques.

💡 Pro tip for salons

Cure gels with strong heat development in thin layers, and briefly take the hand out of the lamp during the first seconds if the client feels heat. And always test a new gel in a small size first (many builder gels are also available in 3 or 15 ml) before switching to 250 or 1000 ml.
