Whether "French gel nails", "French nail design" or "babyboomer nails" – natural, elegant designs are evergreens on Google. Both looks appear well-groomed, suit every occasion and are constantly in demand at nail salons. But how do they differ, and how do you create them with gel? Here's the guide.
Babyboomer vs. French: the difference
French nails have a clearly defined white tip (smile line) on a natural, pink or nude base.
Babyboomer nails are the soft version: instead of a sharp line, there's a gentle gradient (ombré) from pink or nude at the nail bed to white at the tip.
What you need
- Nail prep & primer and base or bonding gel
- A make-up or camouflage gel for the natural, rosy base – e.g. our BNC Base One UV Cover French Pink
- An opaque white for the tip: our BNC French Gel White
- Builder gel for strength
- Finish gel for shine
- A fine gel brush for the French line or a sponge or fan brush for the babyboomer – see our brushes
Guide: French nails with gel
- Preparation: Push back the cuticles, shape, roughen and degrease the nail. More in The perfect base for gel nails.
- Base & build: Apply a thin layer of bonding gel and cure. Then sculpt builder gel and cure.
- Camouflage: Apply a thin layer of make-up gel for an even, rosy nail bed and cure.
- Draw the smile line: Apply French Gel White to the tip with a fine brush. Work from the sides to the centre so the line is symmetrical. Cure.
- Seal: Apply finish gel, cure and, if needed, remove the sticky layer with cleaner.
Tip: The smile line should follow the natural line of your nail bed – that's when the result looks most harmonious.
Guide: babyboomer nails with gel
- Preparation and base as above.
- Pink base: Apply make-up gel to the entire nail and cure.
- Apply white: Place French Gel White on the front third – don't cure yet.
- Blend: With a clean, slightly damp brush or sponge, pull the white towards the centre of the nail until you get a soft transition. Cure.
- Repeat: Repeat for more coverage.
- Encapsulate: Seal with builder or finish gel so the surface is smooth.
By the way, babyboomer also works with acrylic – "acrylic babyboomer nails" is another popular search. Use pink and white acrylic powder and blend the beads into each other.
Modern variations for 2026
- Micro French: A super-thin tip – especially pretty on short nails
- Coloured French: A tip in bordeaux, black or ruby red instead of white
- Double French: Two fine lines on top of each other
- Glitter babyboomer: A hint of Extreme Glitter Gel Diamond in the transition for festive occasions
- Milky babyboomer: With milky white for an especially delicate look
Avoid common mistakes
- Too much white on the babyboomer: Several thin layers are better than one thick one.
- Uneven smile lines: Always compare the nails side by side before curing.
- Yellow tinge: A high-quality finish gel and sufficient curing time protect against yellowing.
FAQ: babyboomer & French
Which is more timeless: French or babyboomer?
Both are timeless classics. French looks a little more graphic, babyboomer softer and more natural.
Can I do babyboomer on short nails?
Yes – on short nails in particular the gradient looks very natural and well-groomed.
How long do French gel nails last?
With good preparation, three to four weeks. After that, refill or redo the set.
