Nail Shape Guide: Almond, Stiletto, Coffin, Squoval & Oval

Nagelformen-Guide: Nageldesignerin mit rosa Handschuhen feilt Mandelnägel – Mandel, Stiletto, Coffin

Which nail shapes are there – and which one suits your hands, your everyday life and your style? In this nail shape guide we introduce almond, stiletto, coffin, squoval and oval and show you how to file each shape neatly. Whether you work in a salon or do your gel nails at home: with the right shape, every set looks so much more harmonious.

The 5 most popular nail shapes at a glance

Every nail shape has its own character. Some are especially practical for everyday life, others are real statement shapes. Here are the key differences at a glance:

ShapeWhat it looks likeIdeal lengthEveryday practicality
OvalEvenly rounded, like an eggshort to mediumvery high
SquovalStraight tip with softly rounded cornersshort to mediumvery high
AlmondSlim and tapered with a rounded tipmedium to longhigh
Coffin / BallerinaTapered sides, straight cut-off tipmedium to longmedium
StilettoPointed, very dramaticlongrather low

Oval & squoval: the everyday classics

Oval nails

The oval shape is timeless and makes fingers look slimmer. It is especially well suited to natural nails and short enhancements, because there are no corners that can catch or break.

  • Perfect for beginners and anyone who works a lot with their hands
  • Looks just as lovely with soft nude shades as with a bold red, e.g. BNC Colour Gel Neon Red
  • Tip: file from both sides towards the centre so the curve stays symmetrical

Squoval nails

Squoval combines “square” and “oval”: the tip is straight, the corners are softly rounded. That makes squoval the ideal shape for a classic French – with the opaque BNC French Gel White you get a clean, even smile line. We show you how to do a French step by step in our guide Babyboomer & French Nails.

Almond nails: elegant and versatile

Almond nails taper slightly at the sides and end in a soft, rounded tip – just like an almond. They visually lengthen the hand and are currently one of the most requested shapes in the salon.

  • Need some length: extend short natural nails with tips or forms
  • Don’t file the side walls too much, otherwise the nail loses stability
  • Look especially beautiful with deep autumn shades, e.g. the berry tone BNC Colour Gel Fall Daffodil No. 3 purple-red metallic with its fine metallic shimmer

Coffin & stiletto: the statement shapes

Coffin or ballerina

The coffin shape (also called ballerina) tapers like the almond nail but ends in a straight, flattened tip. It looks modern and offers a large surface for nail art, ombré or glitter.

Stiletto

Stiletto nails come to a point and are the most striking of all nail shapes. They are real eye-catchers, but they require practice and a stable enhancement.

Important for both shapes:

  • An extension is almost always needed – with BNC Glamour Tips or the BNC Horseshoe Nail Form Roll, which can be adapted individually to length and shape
  • The stress point needs extra support: the firm BNC Stress Point Builder Gel was developed specifically to reinforce this zone
  • For everyday life, choose medium lengths – the longer and pointier, the higher the risk of breakage

Which nail shape suits my hands?

There are no fixed rules – but a few rules of thumb help you decide:

  • Short fingers / wide nail beds: almond or oval visually lengthen
  • Long, slim fingers: squoval and coffin add beautiful accents
  • Lots of manual work, typing, small children: short oval or squoval nails
  • Special occasions and photo shoots: stiletto or long coffin nails
  • Natural nails without extension: follow the natural cuticle line – mirrored at the tip, it looks most harmonious

Not sure about terms like stress point or C-curve? Our nail design glossary explains all the key terms in brief.

How to file nail shapes properly

  1. Set the length: first shorten all nails to the same length.
  2. Rough shape: create the basic shape with a coarser grit, e.g. with the BNC Zebra File straight 100/180. For enhancements, the BNC Professional File white, developed for removing UV gel and acrylic, is a great choice.
  3. File in one direction: on natural nails, don’t saw back and forth – work from the outside towards the centre to minimise splitting.
  4. Check symmetry: turn the hand and look at the nails from above, from the front and in profile.
  5. Finishing: smooth the edges with the fine side. Before a new enhancement, gently buff the natural nail with the BNC Buffer white 100/100.
  6. Care: finally, pamper cuticles and nails with nail oil, e.g. BNC Scented Nail Oil Almond clear.

💡 Pro tip for salons

Create a tip display with all five shapes for consultations: simply file tips into oval, squoval, almond, coffin and stiletto and paint them with your most popular colour gels. That way your client sees right away how shape and colour work together – and deciding becomes much easier.

FAQ: Nail shapes

Which nail shape is the most practical for everyday life?

Oval and squoval in short to medium length. They have no pointed or sharp corners and therefore break less often.

Which nail shape makes fingers look longer?

Almond and oval nails visually lengthen the fingers because they taper and draw the eye forward.

What is the difference between coffin and ballerina?

There is none – both terms describe the same shape: tapered sides and a straight, flattened tip.

Can I wear stiletto nails with natural nails?

Only if your natural nails are long and strong. Stiletto usually requires an extension with tips or forms plus builder gel so the tip stays stable.

How often should I refile the nail shape?

With enhancements, the shape is readjusted at each infill every three to four weeks. You can lightly refile natural nails whenever the shape grows out.
