UV or LED Lamp for Gel Nails? The Complete Buying Guide

Moderne weiß-rosa UV/LED Nagellampe mit Hand und frisch gestylten Gelnägeln beim Aushärten

A good UV lamp for gel nails – or would an LED lamp be the better choice? Beginners ask themselves this just as often as nail salons looking to upgrade their equipment. In this buying guide you'll learn how UV, LED and UV/LED combination lamps differ, what to look for when buying a nail lamp and how to keep your lamp in top shape for a long time.

UV or LED lamp: what's the difference?

Gel, Shellac and UV gel polish contain photoinitiators. They react to light within a specific wavelength range and make the material cure. So what matters is not how bright a lamp looks, but whether its light matches the gel.

  • Classic UV lamp: works with fluorescent tubes and emits a broad UV spectrum. It cures many conventional UV gels but usually takes longer, and the tubes lose power over time.
  • Pure LED lamp: emits light in a narrow wavelength range. That's fast and energy-efficient – but it only works reliably with gels designed for exactly that range.
  • UV/LED combination lamp (dual LED): combines LEDs with two wavelengths, often 365 and 405 nm. This lets you cure UV gels, LED gels and UV gel polishes with just one device.

Our verdict: for most users a UV/LED combination lamp is the best choice, because you don't have to commit to one gel system. You'll find an overview of all models in our category curing lamps & work lamps.

Buying a nail lamp: what to look for

Wattage and number of LEDs

Wattage is a first indication of power, but it isn't everything: how many LEDs are built in and how evenly they light up the hand matter too. Also check the information on your gels. Some products state a minimum power – the BNC Base One UV Gel Cover, for example, cures in 120 seconds in a 48 W UV/LED lamp, and the builder gel BNC Base One Shimmer Glazed Apricot in 60 seconds at a minimum of 48 W.

Timer and operation

Several timer settings keep you flexible: short times for flash curing, longer ones for the final cure. An automatic on/off sensor and a display with time indicator are very practical.

Room for hand, thumb and feet

  • The interior should fit the whole hand without your fingers touching the walls.
  • Thumbs often sit at an angle – cure them separately if needed so the light hits the nail head-on.
  • For pedicures, a device with an open or removable base plate is helpful. Check the product details to see whether the dimensions suit feet.

Compatibility with your gels

The most important point: lamp and gel must match. Before buying, read the manufacturer's instructions for your gels and Shellac polishes – they state whether a product is suitable for UV, LED or both and which time is recommended.

Our BNC nail lamps at a glance

  • BNC curing lamp 168 watt white/pink UV/LED: 168 watts with 36 dual LED diodes for all LED and UV gels as well as UV gel polishes. Timer with 10, 30, 60 or 99 seconds, a spacious interior for the whole hand and automatic on/off – made for everyday salon work.
  • BNC UV/LED 26 watt lamp: 26 watts with 18 LEDs in the 365 & 405 nm wavelength range. Digital time display, timer with 10, 30 and 60 seconds, 120 seconds in sensor mode and a removable base plate for hygienic cleaning – ideal for home use and getting started.

How long does gel need to cure under the lamp?

There are no universal times – curing time depends on the product, the layer thickness and the lamp. As a rough guide: under classic UV light gels often need around 120 seconds, under UV/LED light often 60 seconds or less. The information on the product is always what counts, for example:

Thick layers cure less thoroughly than thin ones. It's better to apply several thin layers and cure each one separately. Our guide How to apply Shellac properly shows you how, step by step. You'll find matching products in our gels category.

Caring for your lamp and replacement tubes

  • Keep it clean: gel residue on the base plate or the LEDs weakens the light. Clean the device when it is switched off and has cooled down – a removable base plate makes this especially easy.
  • Replace UV tubes in time: tubes often still glow even though their power has already dropped. If the gel is still tacky after the usual time, that's a warning sign. The BNC 9 watt UV replacement tube delivers stable performance for up to 500 working hours and is available individually or as a set of 4.
  • Older BNC devices: for the old BNC curing lamp, the BNC ENS UV lamp 9 watt is the matching replacement bulb.
  • Change all tubes at once: this keeps the light even and all nails cure equally well.

Safety: how to use your nail lamp correctly

  • Only as long as necessary: stick to the stated times and don't cure twice “just to be safe”.
  • No gel on the skin: remove any gel from the cuticle or skin before curing. Cured gel on the skin can lead to intolerances.
  • Heat spikes: if it gets warm for a moment during curing, briefly pull your hand out. Thin layers and a flash-cure setting help.
  • Protect your hands: if you cure very often, you can use fingerless protective gloves or apply cream to the backs of your hands beforehand.
  • Don't look into the light and switch the lamp off after use.

If you notice any skin reactions, stop using the products and seek medical advice.

💡 Pro tip for salons

In the salon, work with a powerful UV/LED combination lamp as your main device and keep a second one on hand – that way you can cure in parallel and you're covered if one fails. Note the recommended time for each gel right at the workstation, and check the performance of tube devices regularly: replace the tubes in good time and always as a complete set.

FAQ: UV and LED lamps for gel nails

Can I cure UV gel with an LED lamp?

Not always reliably with a pure LED lamp. With a UV/LED combination lamp it works, provided the manufacturer states the gel is suitable for UV/LED lamps.

How many watts should a nail lamp have?

That depends on your gels. Some products state a minimum power, such as 48 W. If you work a lot or run a salon, a powerful device like the 168 watt model makes sense.

How can I tell that the UV tubes need replacing?

If the gel is still tacky or soft after the usual time even though you applied thin layers, the power is probably dropping. Then replace all tubes together.

Why does it suddenly get hot under the lamp?

Curing generates reaction heat, especially with thick layers and powerful lamps. Work in thin layers and briefly pull your hand out if it gets too warm.

Is a UV/LED lamp also suitable for Shellac?

Yes – according to the product description, combination devices like the BNC UV/LED 26 watt lamp also cure UV gel polishes such as Shellac. Follow the times stated on the respective polish.
