Winter Nail Care: How to Keep Your Nails Healthy and Beautiful

Winter nail care matters more than many people think: cold temperatures outside, dry heated air indoors and frequent hand washing draw moisture from your skin and nails. The result is brittle, splitting nails and torn cuticles. With the right care, though, your nails stay healthy and strong even in the cold season – here are the best tips for a winter-proof nail care routine.

Why nails suffer especially in winter

The natural nail consists of many thin layers of keratin with moisture and lipids stored between them. When these are missing, the nail loses flexibility and breaks or splits more easily. In winter, several stress factors come together:

  • Cold: blood flow to the fingers decreases, so skin and cuticles are less well supplied.
  • Heated air: low humidity dries out hands and nails even further.
  • Frequent hand washing: water and soap strip the protective lipids from skin and nails.
  • Temperature changes: constantly switching between warm and cold puts strain on the nail plate.

1. Moisture is key

Dry air draws moisture from your nails, which can make them brittle. That is why care should be part of your daily routine in winter:

  • Use a rich hand cream every day – ideally after every hand wash – such as the BNC Velvet Rose Gold Hand Cream with shea butter and vitamin E. Massage it into your cuticles and nail edges as well.
  • Apply nail oil regularly to keep your cuticles supple. A nail care oil roller is handy on the go, while a larger bottle such as the BNC Scented Nail Oil Almond Clear with pipette is worthwhile at home or in the salon. You will find more scents in our nail oils category.
  • A short evening routine is ideal: massage oil into the nail and cuticle, then apply hand cream on top – so the nourishing ingredients can soak in overnight.

2. Protection from cold and water

Cold weakens nails and makes them more prone to cracks. Cleaning products and lots of water also take their toll.

  • Always wear gloves outdoors to protect your hands and nails from freezing temperatures.
  • Wear rubber or nitrile household gloves for housework so that water and cleaning agents don't reach your skin and nails. Thin cotton gloves underneath stop your hands from sweating.
  • Dry your hands thoroughly after washing – including between the fingers and around the nail edges.
  • Use an acetone-free nail polish remover and moisturise your nails and cuticles afterwards.

3. Nutrition for strong nails

A balanced diet is an important foundation for healthy nails, because the nail grows from the inside out.

  • Pay attention to nutrients such as biotin, zinc, iron and omega-3 fatty acids, which contribute to normal nail growth.
  • Foods such as nuts, eggs, pulses, oats and green vegetables support nail health from within.
  • Drink enough in winter too – it is easy to forget when it's cold.

If your nails remain very brittle, discoloured or changed despite good care, have it checked by a doctor. You can read more in our article on brittle nails: causes and remedies.

4. File instead of clipping

Improper filing can weaken nails – especially in winter, when they are drier anyway.

  • Always file in one direction rather than back and forth, so the free edge doesn't split.
  • Use a fine-grit file for natural nails, for example the BNC half-moon file “Flower Design” 180/240. Coarse files are meant for enhancements, not for the natural nail.
  • File dry nails – after a bath or shower they are soft and tear more easily.
  • Shorten long nails gradually with a file rather than clipping off a lot at once.

Find out which file suits you in our guide Which nail file is right for me?. A wider selection is available in the files & buffers category.

5. Care for your cuticles instead of cutting them

Cuticles tear easily, especially in winter. Don't cut them off; instead, gently push them back with an orange wood stick or a pusher after oiling. Carefully remove loose bits of skin with clean cuticle nippers – without cutting into healthy skin.

💡 Pro tip for salons

In winter, finish every treatment with a drop of nail oil on the cuticles and recommend a roller for home use. Well-cared-for, supple cuticles help gel and acrylic enhancements grow out cleanly and make them less prone to lifting.

Common winter nail care mistakes

  • Moisturising only occasionally instead of daily and consistently
  • Cleaning or washing dishes without gloves
  • Filing or clipping nails right after a shower
  • Cutting cuticles instead of caring for them
  • Using your nails to open cans or scratch off labels

FAQ: Winter nail care

How often should I apply nail oil in winter?

Ideally every day, or even twice a day. Oil is especially effective in the evening before bed, because it has plenty of time to soak in.

Is hand cream alone enough for my nails?

Hand cream mainly nourishes the skin. Nail oil penetrates the cuticle and nail plate better. A combination of both is therefore ideal.

Why do my nails split more in winter?

Cold, heated air and lots of water make the nail lose moisture and lipids. It becomes less flexible, and the nail layers separate more easily.

Can I wear gel nails or shellac in winter?

Yes. An enhancement can even protect the natural nail from mechanical stress. It is important to keep oiling your cuticles regularly and to have the enhancement removed properly instead of picking it off.
